Irene is asteroid #14 and was discovered by John Russell Hind. Irene is a common Main Belt Asteroid of the type S. Her orbital period is four years and fifty-nine days, her orbit’s eccentricity is 0.1670, and the inclination 9.10 degrees.

Irene is named after Eirēnē (Εἰρήνη), the Greek goddess of peace. Irene and Irena are variants of her name. The German male name Irenäus and the Polish male name Ireneusz are also derived from Irene. Eirēnē (Εἰρήνη) was depicted in art as a beautiful young woman carrying a cornucopia, sceptre, and a torch. She was instead also depicted with Plutos, the god of richness, as a baby on her arm. Eirēnē (Εἰρήνη) is the daughter of Themis and Zeus, and a sister of Dikē (Δίκη) and Eunomia (Εὐνομία). These three sisters are together the Horai of the second generation. Eirēnē (Εἰρήνη) shows the cause (the power of Zeus and the justice of Themis) of peace and the result (wealth or even richness) of peace.

The Horai should be examined together. As revealed by Eris’ natural satellite Dysnomia, Eunomia is an antagonist of Eris. Eunomia is supported by her sisters Dike and Irene. Instead can also be said that Eunomia and Dike support Irene, who is peace and hence the absence of strife. So Irene is the main antagonist of Eris, but in need of the support of the other Horai.
