Grieve

Grieve is one of the asteroids of the list of the asteroids, that asteroid astrology pioneer Martha Lang-Wescott deems relevant. Grieve belongs to the largest asteroids, that cross the Mars orbit from the side of the Asteroid Main Belt. The asteroid’s own orbit has a rather high inclination of 27.799° and also a rather high eccentricity of 0.3832. Grieve is the asteroid #4451 and belongs to the class S according to the SMASS classification or the type Svw according to Bus-DeMeo.

The asteroid #4451 is named after a recent Canadian geologist, who took part in the Canadian Survey, but neither he nor this survey is famous for anything. Who named the asteroid has very likely known the geologist Grieve personally. Only his name can be examined. Grieve is the 14178th-most common surname in the USA according to the census of 2010 and belongs to 2118 individuals. 94.85% of them are White. (Interesting that this race may be identified by the skin color only, although the same thing could in the USA be seen as racism if done with any other race.) Unlike in languages, which are written in whole words, don’t English names need to have a meaning, which is still understandable nowadays and translatable into other languages. But Grieve definitely has and it is unambiguous. Grieve means to cause pain or sorrows to others and it can also mean to mourn.

I don’t see how this asteroid could be especially important, so I believe that Martha Lang-Wescott chose it only because it is so easy to understand. Besides the grief, which is mainly by this asteroid being shown to be done to other people, should also be considered that the high eccentricity and the high inclination of the orbit of this asteroid makes it likely that this asteroid is kicked out of a normal orbit by Jupiter or even Mars. To be kicked around this way can certainly cause some grief too. This is no surprise because you interpret an asteroid then correctly, when the orbit and the name let you arrive at the same conclusion.
