Agamemnon

Agamemnon is asteroid #911 and also known as 1919 FD. Agamemnon was discovered by Karl Wilhelm Reinmuth at Heidelberg. Agamemnon is of the type D and a Jupiter trojan of the Greek camp (in Jupiter’s Lagrange-point L4).

Agamemnon is named after a mythological Greek king (of Mycenae) and hero of the Iliad. Agamémnōn (Ἀγαμέμνων) means “very steadfast”. Agamémnōn (Ἀγαμέμνων) is the son of Aërope (Ἀερόπη) and Atreus (Ἀτρεύς), hence he was one of the Atreides. More precisely he was the fourth generation of six (the sixth, Tisamenos, isn’t represented in the sky, at least not yet) in the House of Atreus, who fell victim to the curse versus Tantalus. Agamémnōn (Ἀγαμέμνων) was the supreme commander of the Achaioí (Ἀχαιοί), the united Greek forces in the war versus Troy. His own wife killed him when he returned, although Kassandra had warned him. His son Orestes revenged him. Agamémnōn (Ἀγαμέμνων) was ready to sacrifice his daughter Iphigeneía (Ἰφιγένεια) for achieving beneficial winds for the expedition to Troy. The goddess Artemis didn’t agree with this sacrifice, so saved Iphigeneía (Ἰφιγένεια) and hid her on the Crimean peninsula. But her mother, the wife of Agamémnōn (Ἀγαμέμνων), thought she would be dead, so she killed her husband on his return in order to take revenge for her daughter. During the Trojan War suffered the Greek camp from an epidemic. Such events were always usual during wars, but the ancient Greek wanted to find a cause and made Agamémnōn (Ἀγαμέμνων) responsible because he rejected the wish of Chryses, a priest of Apollo, who wanted to buy his daughter Chryseis (this actually means daughter of Chryses) back, who was a prey in the Trojan War and got donated to Agamémnōn (Ἀγαμέμνων). The greatest hero of the Greeks, Achilleus (Ἀχιλλεύς), fomented the Greeks against Agamémnōn (Ἀγαμέμνων), so that he had to give Chryseis back. He didn’t get any compensation, so he took instead Brisēḯs (Βρισηΐς) from Achilleus (Ἀχιλλεύς). This seemed to be only fair because Brisēḯs (Βρισηΐς) belonged to Achilleus (Ἀχιλλεύς) as a prey of war, just as Chryseis had belonged to Agamémnōn (Ἀγαμέμνων) as a prey of war and Achilleus (Ἀχιλλεύς) made him lose Chryseis.

Brisēḯs (Βρισηΐς) is represented in the sky by asteroid #655 or Briseïs. She was discovered by the American astronomer Joel Hastings Metcalf at Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts, USA. Briseïs is also known as 1907 BF and is an usual Main Belt Asteroid.

Achilleus (Ἀχιλλεύς) is represented in the sky by asteroid #588 or Achilles. He was discovered by Max Wolff at Heidelberg in 1906. Achilles is of the type D and a Jupiter trojan of the Greek camp. Achilles was the first ever discovered Jupiter trojan and belongs to the ten largest Jupiter trojans.

Brisēḯs (Βρισηΐς) means daughter of Brises. Her real name was Hippodameia. After Achilleus (Ἀχιλλεύς) had to give her to Agamémnōn (Ἀγαμέμνων), Achilleus (Ἀχιλλεύς) retreated from battle. But he was the greatest warrior of the Greeks, so Agamémnōn (Ἀγαμέμνων) had to make him take part in the battles again. To achieve this, Agamémnōn (Ἀγαμέμνων) vowed to Achilleus (Ἀχιλλεύς) that he never touched Hippodameia, gave her back to Achilleus (Ἀχιλλεύς) and added to this donation seven other women, who were also caught as prey in the Trojan War. Should you have thought that the Trojan War was only for the famous Helene, then you know better now. Nobody will risk his life in a war for the bride of somebody, who isn’t at least a good friend. Many people are misled by such events of mythology and think that young men would be ready to conquer women in wars if there is a lack of women in their own vicinity. If this would be true, then whole armies of Chinese young men would have overrun all western countries already decades ago. So this variant also isn’t part of real human behaviour. What we see here in this part of mythology is instead a question of honour: the higher the rank of a noble man, the more concubines he must have. He ridicules himself if he doesn’t.

Achilles represents a great hero. Achilles represents also the famous weakness at his heel. Achilles represents to fall in love with a slave, so together with Briseïs will both asteroids be useful for synastry.

Agamemnon trying to sacrifice his daughter doesn’t mean that he didn’t love her. He was ready to sacrifice her for the greater good and she was a great sacrifice because he loved her. Agamemnon was a great leader and commander and statesman because he always took himself back for the greater good. Agamemnon represents a man of great honour. Agamemnon also represents a man, who has always bad luck with women. Homér lets the deceased Agamemnon give the advice to never trust any woman.
