Brucato is asteroid #4203 and also known as 1985 FD3. Brucato was discovered by Carolyn Jean Spellmann Shoemaker at the Palomar Observatory. Brucato revolves around the Sun in 1 538 days. Brucato’s orbit shows an eccentricity of 0.135, a semi-major axis of 2.605 Astronomical Units, and an inclination of 28.58 degrees. Brucato is the undisputed head of the Hirayama-family Brucato. This Hirayama-family comprises asteroids of the types C and X. Sif is an example for a member of the Hirayama-family Brucato.
The asteroid #4203 is named after Robert Joseph Brucato, American astronomer and assistant director of the Palomar Observatory. I’ve not been able to find anything else on him.
The surname Brucato is of unclear origin, but was first found in Genoa and has many spelling variants. It is either via a place name derived from Sicilian bbruca and would then mean tamarisk or it is the Sicilian word brucato (unclear because of the spelling variants) and would then mean brocade. In the latter case Brucato would most likely have become the surname of a family of weavers or cloth merchants.
Brucato represents assistant directors and the responsibility of assistant directors. Brucato takes in particular some responsibility for the asteroids of his Hirayama-family. Brucato’s high inclination shows an uncommon perspective while he does this, maybe an ivory tower. Besides this Brucato represents brocade and expensive clothes for showing a rather high societal rank.
