Abundantia

Abundantia is asteroid #151 and couldn’t be more typical for an background asteroid in the Main Asteroid Belt. Abundantia was discovered by the Austrian astronomer Johann Palisa at the Austrian Naval Observatory in Pula. The name Abundantia was however chosen by Edmund Weiss, an Austrian astronomer of the Vienna Observatory.

Abundantia is named after the Roman goddess Abundantia, who is the goddess of abundance. No temples and no festivals honoured Abundantia. But she was shown on Roman coins. She shall give prosperity. So she was probably invented for political reasons, so that she can be shown on coins.

The Magi Astrologers stated that Varuna represents overwhelming amounts. Can Abundantia be ignored then? Is abundance less than an overwhelming amount? I guess so, but is the difference between Varuna and Abundantia merely a matter of degree then? It is more likely that Abundantia has the purpose to indicate abundance, while Varuna can show different things or situations. After all, Varuna’s orbit mustn’t be counted as confirmed yet. Varuna is also a cubewano, so mainly indicating a made-up world because cubewanoes are named after creators. So an imaginary abundance is more likely to be shown by Varuna, while Abundantia shows real abundance.
