Justitia

Justitia is asteroid #269 and was discovered by the Austrian astronomer Johann Palisa. Justitia is also designated as 1942 XY. Justitia is a very common Main Belt Asteroid.

Justitia is named after Iustitia, the Roman goddess of justice. She gets frequently identified with the Greek Themis as well as with the Greek Dike, but Themis represents a divine justice and Dike represents a human justice based on revenge, while Iustitia represents a human justice based on balance. She was hence also identified with Aequitas, the Roman goddess of equity, with whom she shares most of her attributes.

The fact that justice is represented by several celestial objects seems to be confusing at first. But if you talk with other people about justice, then you could quickly find that different people have different ideas about justice. There are different definitions of justice. Hence the representation of different types of justice by different celestial objects is only logical. Justitia represents social justice, which is mainly based on equality.
