Kumakiri is asteroid #7472 and also known as 1992 CU. Kumakiri was discovered by the Japanese astronomers Akiyama Makio (秋山 万喜夫) and Furuta Toshimasa (古田 俊正) at Susono (裾野) City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. Kumakiri’s orbit is characterized by a semi-major axis of 3.01 Astronomical Units, an eccentricity of 0.104, a period of revolution of 1 909 days, and an inclination of 9.9 degrees.

Kumakiri is named after Kumakiri Kazuo, who is a Japanese amateur astronomer, born in 1923. Nothing else seems to be publicly known on this astronomer. The family-name Kumakiri however is also the family-name of few famous people. So I can tell that there is only one likely Japanese spelling of the Japanese name Kumakiri (熊切). This name is translatable and can only be translated as bear slices.

Kumakiri is another asteroid of the bear theme. Maybe Kumakiri is also an asteroid of the food theme. This is at least my current interpretation of the name. I have no other idea what bear slices could else mean or be. Kumakiri hints of course also to Japanese culture, especially in the northernmost region, where bears live. They are probably protected animals there.
