Standing Bear

Standing Bear is asteroid #19407 and also known as 1998 FG11. Standing Bear was discovered by the American amateur astronomer Robert Glen Linderholm at his private observatory, the Lime Creek Observatory in Cambridge (formerly Pickletown), Furnas County, Nebraska, USA. Standing Bear is a member of the Hirayama-family Maria/ Roma.

Standing Bear is named after Standing Bear, a Ponca chief and Native American civil rights leader. He was born somewhen between 1829 and 1834. He passed away in 1908 and is said to have died of oral cancer. He had a wife, whose name was Zazette. Wikipedia states that they had several children, but then quotes a census, which states that Zazette didn’t have any children. The Ponca lived from agriculture and hunting. They had no livestock. Thus the Ponca are another tribe proving that the neolithic revolution was all about plants and not about animals. During the 1850s and the 1860s European immigrants settled on the agricultural land of the Ponca, while raids from the native tribes Brulé and Oglala cut them off of their hunting grounds. So the Ponca sold their land and were resettled, but the new land was less suitable for farming and the Ponca weren’t supported as promised by the United States government. The Ponca suffered from famines. The Ponca were then resettled again and this also more than one time. Standing Bear sued for a writ of habeas corpus in U.S. District Court in Omaha, Nebraska in April 1879 because he didn’t want to be resettled again. General Crook was named as the formal defendant. Judge Elmer Scipio Dundy ruled on the 12th of May in 1879 that an “Indian” is a person within the meaning of habeas corpus. He stated that the federal government had failed to show a basis under law for the Poncas’ arrest and captivity. Since then Natives in the USA are accepted as citizens and entitled to rights and protection by the law. Standing Bear traveled from 1879 until 1883 through the USA and Europe and spoke about Indian rights in forums. Standing Bear returned to his home and became a farmer. The latest part of his career was when Standing Bear worked in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show in 1893.

Although Standing Bear is a person name asteroid, it is quite unlikely to need a representative of persons named Standing Bear. The asteroid is a special asteroid because an exception was made in the naming when a name with a blank space in it was given to asteroid #19407. This certainly was made because of the importance of the person Standing Bear for history. So Standing Bear could represent persons, who are important for history. Standing Bear will definitely represent steadfast persons and steadfastness. In connection with these terms I found in a dictionary the expression to bear up. This expression looks to me like made for Standing Bear, so the asteroid #19407 will exactly stand for bearing up.
