Schulhof is asteroid #2384 and also known as 1943 EC1. Schulhof was discovered by the French astronomer Marguerite Laugier (née Lhomme) at the Nice Observatory in southeastern France. Schulhof’s orbit is characterized by a semi-major axis of 2.61 Astronomical Units, an eccentricity of 0.12, a period of revolution of 1 542 days, and an inclination of 13.5 degrees. Schulhof is of the type S and the head (namesake) of the small asteroid-family Schulhof. This small asteroid-family is located within the region of the asteroid-family Eunomia, so they either form an orbit group or the Hirayama-family Eunomia must be upgraded to an asteroid-clan and the Schulhof-family is a member of the Eunomia-clan.
Schulhof is named after the Hungarian-born Austrian-French astronomer Lipót Schulhof, who also is known as Leopold Schulhof and Leopold Schulhoff. He lived from 1847 until 1921. The asteroid #2384 got the name Schulhof in 1984. So Schulhof’s complete biography has to be considered. He was born as the son of a Rabbi. Lipót Schulhof went to Vienna as soon as he had graduated from school and began to study medicine in 1866. But he changed to mathematics, physics, and astronomy already in 1867. Lipót Schulhof began to work at the Vienna Observatory, but found that his myopia (shortsightedness) restricted him to theoretical astronomy. He was so successful in this field that the French Bureau des Longitudes employed him. Leopold Schulhof became a French citizen in 1884. He retired in 1915, but still was frequently working in the observatory. He had a rush accident in the library of the observatory in 1920 and fell so hard that he couldn’t leave his home anymore. His legs were completely paralyzed in 1921 until he died of uremia.
Leopold Schulhof also was a discoverer of minor planets. The official naming citation of the asteroid Schulhof explicitly mentions the asteroid #147 or Protogeneia. The asteroid #2384 caught my attention because Schulhof is a German word and hence a translatable name at least in the case of people, who were born in Hungaria while Hungaria belonged to Austria. Schulhof means schoolyard.
Schulhof belongs to the cause-of-death theme and indicates dying of uremia. Schulhof can also indicate shortsightedness or hint to schoolyards. The asteroid Protogeneia is named after the daughter of Deucalion from Greek mythology. Schulhof seems for some unknown reason to emphasize Leopold Schulhof’s discovery of Protogeneia more than his other discoveries. Protogeneia is the only asteroid discovered by Lipót Schulhof, but mentioning it in the official naming citation of Schulhof nevertheless is something unusual. The emphasis could be on the singleness of the discovery. So this could also be part of an interpretation of the asteroid Schulhof in astrological charts.
