Triglav is asteroid #2522 and also known as 1980 PP. Triglav is a member of the Hirayama-family Eos. Triglav was discovered by the Czech astronomer Zdeňka Vávrová at the Kleť Observatory (in Czech: Hvězdárna Kleť ). Triglav’s orbit is characterized by a semi-major axis of 3.02 Astronomical Units, an eccentricity of 0.06, a period of revolution of 1 914 days, and an inclination of 8.8 degrees.
Triglav is named after a Slavic god, that was worshipped in the area, where now Poland borders Germany. The god is called Triglav (Триглав) in Church Slavonic. But whether this name is the god’s original name isn’t clear. Triglav (Триглав) is translatable and means “three-headed”. This god used to be depicted as a person with three heads and also as three heads only. So chroniclers could have called this deity Triglav because of the three heads, but without knowing the deity’s name. The oldest sources depict Triglav as female. The name could also be from Ancient Greek, where the goddess Hekate also was called Trikephalos. This name also means “three-headed”. Although several mythologies know three-headed deities, Triglav most often is seen as a merger of three gods, that form a trinity this way. According to Ebbo, archbishop of Rheims from 816 until 835 and again from 840 to 841, the three heads of Triglav represent sky, earth, and underworld. Fabrics were often put over the eyes and mouths of Triglav, so that the deity could neither watch sins nor talk about them. The cult of Triglav was financed by spoils of war. Ten percent of the spoils of war went to the temple of Triglav. A ritual there could make Triglav forecast the outcome of a forthcoming battle.
Slavic deities are known from either folklore or from non-Slavic sources because the Slavic people weren’t able to read and write before they became christians. So there are no written Slavic sources on any topic of Slavic mythology. Hence the above already is everything, which still is known on Triglav. He or she seems to be a rather weak deity, when humans can decide what is seen by this deity. Merging three deities into one and then decide this deity’s skills is a clear trace of a man-made god. On the other hand this is known only from christian clergymen and these describe everything only within the limits of their prejudices. So the connection between warfare and economy probably is the only reliable part of the description of Triglav. Hence this connection must be the realm of Triglav and he has to be counted among the gods of war.
