Augusthorch

Augusthorch is asteroid #62190 and also known as 2000 SS44. Augusthorch’s orbit is characterized by a semi-major axis of 2.57 Astronomical Units, an eccentricity of 0.29, a period of revolution of 1 505 days, and an inclination of 5.9 degrees. Augusthorch is of the type C. Augusthorch was discovered by the German mechanic and amateur astronomer Jens Kandler at the Drebach People’s Observatory (Volkssternwarte Drebach).

August Horch is named after the German engineer and automobile pioneer August Horch, who lived on the material plane from 1868 until 1951. The father of August Horch was a blacksmith. So August Horch learnt this handicraft, when he was thirteen years of age. His whole family was a family of blacksmiths and winemakers. August Horch used his skill for building his first transportation vehicle, which was a three-wheeled penny-farthing. Then August Horch studied engineering and in 1899 founded the company Horch & Cie, which began production in 1900. The company built upper class cars and racing cars. August Horch had to move the company twice on the request of his investors, the second time in 1904 for going public. August Horch had no more influence in his company, so that he left the company in early 1909. Still in this year and in sight of the old company, August Horch together with his friend and investor (Friedrich) Paul Fikentscher founded a new company, which also was named after Horch. This led to a trial, where August Horch lost the right to use his own name as a brand. So the new company was in 1910 renamed to Audi Automobilwerke GmbH. This company went public in 1915. The recent Audi AG was founded in 1949 after the Soviets, who were victors of the Second World War, took everything from the Auto Union, which meanwhile had bought both of the companies of August Horch, with them. August Horch had from 1917 on been in many organizations, companies (even in the Auto Union), and committees as an officer. August Horch was after the Second World War accused to have collaborated with the Nazis because his company would have profited from a prolonged war. But he in truth fled the Nazis several times, wasn’t a member in their party, had nothing to say in his own company while it was requested to build military vehicles, and had a Jewish fiancée. So the accusation was found to be absurd.

The name Audi is a translation of the family-name Horch into Latin. It is the imperative singular of hören, which in English would be “to hear”, but languages differ in their concepts and not so much in their words, so the correct translation of horch! or audi! into English is listen! The origin of the family-name Horch nevertheless isn’t somebody, who orders to listen, but somebody, who has to listen and maybe to obey. The personal name August is from the Latin name Augustus of Emperor Augustus. The name means honorable.

Augusthorch isn’t the only asteroid, that is named after an engineer and car builder. The asteroid Ferrari for example is named after Enzo Ferrari. So something else must be the peculiarity of Augusthorch. The asteroid is named after the full name of August Horch. But the full name isn’t as meaningful as each part of it. So this rather can be excluded as the source of the astrological meaning of 2000 SS44. The biography of August Horch is colorful enough. I find most striking that August Horch lost the right of using his own name as a brand. Can you imagine that somebody else, although not being a namesake, holds the right at your own name? Augusthorch must indicate to be looked down on and this to a quite extreme extend.
