Mauritia is asteroid #745 and also known as 1913 QX. Mauritia is of the type C. Mauritia’s orbit is characterized by a semi-major axis of 3.26 Astronomical Units, an eccentricity of 0.04, a period of revolution of 2 152 days, and an inclination of 13.3 degrees. Mauritia was discovered by the German astronomer Franz Heinrich Kaiser at the Heidelberg-Königstuhl Observatory.

Mauritia is named after Saint Maurice, a saint of the Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church. The name was chosen because Saint Maurice is the patron of a Church in the town, where the asteroid discoverer was born. Saint Maurice is said to have been the commander of a Roman Legion, that completely around 290 A.D. got destroyed and each of its soldiers fell as a martyr because these soldiers refused to bring sacrifices to the Roman gods. The legion is known as the Theban Legion. Saint Maurice is the patron of army, infantry, knife- and sword-smiths. Orthodox and Catholic christians prayed to Saint Maurice before a battle. So the saint replaced the ancient gods of war.

Mauritia represents the commander of an army. Mauritia belongs the asteroids with a martial theme. Different from for example the asteroid Bellona, Mauritia indicates neither bloodshed nor the initiation of a war. Mauritia stands for the attempt to do what is righteous even if circumstances make this impossible.
