Amalthea is asteroid #113 and a namesake of Jupiter V. Amalthea’s orbit is characterized by a semi-major axis of 2.38 Astronomical Units, an eccentricity of 0.09, a period of revolution of 1 338 days, and an inclination of five degrees. Amalthea was discovered by the German astronomer Karl Theodor Robert Luther at the Bilk Observatory, Düsseldorf, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The discovery of S/2017 (113) 1, an asteroid-moon orbiting the stony asteroid Amalthea and of five kilometers in size, was announced in 2017, but retracted in 2021 because the discovery was found to merely be a software-reduction coding error. Amalthea is a member of the asteroid-clan Flora/ Ariadne.
Jupiter V is the fifth-largest and third-nearest moon orbiting Jupiter. Jupiter V is the largest of the non-round moons of Jupiter because only the Galilean moons are really spheroid among the moons of Jupiter. Amalthea or Jupiter V has a reddish surface. This shall be due to eruptions of Tupan Patera, which is a volcano on the anti-Jupiter hemisphere of Jupiter’s moon Io. Tupan Patera is named after the thunder god of the Tupí-Guaraní indigenous peoples in Brazil.
Jupiter V and asteroid #113 both are named after Amáltheia (Ἀμάλθεια). After the titan goddess Rhea gave birth to Zeús (Ζεύς), Rhea asked a nymph, who she coincidentally met at a creek, to feed and to hide Zeús (Ζεύς) from Krónos (Κρόνος), who already ate all of the siblings of Zeús (Ζεύς) plus a bloody stone, which Rhea had pretended to be her newborn child. The name of the nymph was Amáltheia (Ἀμάλθεια). She fed Zeús (Ζεύς) with the milk of a goat. Depending on the source, Amáltheia (Ἀμάλθεια) either owned the goat because she was the wife of Pán (Πάν), the Greek god of livestock and shepherding, or was by Rhea turned into the goat. More friends of Rhea also cared for Zeús (Ζεύς), so that he grew up and became a mighty god. But Amáltheia (Ἀμάλθεια) is his most frequently mentioned foster-mother and she probably was the most important. The name Amáltheia (Ἀμάλθεια) shall mean “the tender goddess”. Krónos (Κρόνος) once found the cave, where Amáltheia (Ἀμάλθεια) did hide Zeús (Ζεύς). But Amáltheia (Ἀμάλθεια) reacted before Krónos (Κρόνος) was able to discover Zeús (Ζεύς). Krónos (Κρόνος) poked his head into the dark cave and Amáltheia (Ἀμάλθεια) immediately hit him so hard with her horns that a horn broke off. This horn is known as the keras Amaltheias (κέρας Ἀμαλθείας) or cornucopia or horn of plenty. It fills with whatever is wished by the person, whoever holds it.
Amalthea is indicating to have an abundance of food. Amalthea is showing tenderness, especially in childcare. Amalthea is an asteroid of the food theme and as such represents goat milk and products made from goat milk. I tried to figure out what astrologers think about Amalthea, but I could only find that Amalthea is conjunct the North Node in the natal chart of Jeffrey Epstein. My interpretation of this aspect is that he would still have had to learn to honestly share with other people instead of growing richer and richer, while not even able to use his assets to protect his life. Albeit he certainly groomed some minors, there was no tender childcare. The North Node requires guidance and shows a far away goal.
