Austria

Austria is asteroid #136 and of the type M. Austria also is known as 1950 HT and as A874 FA. Austria’s orbit is characterized by a semi-major axis of 2.88 Astronomical Units, an eccentricity of 0.09, a period of revolution of 1 263 days, and an inclination of 9.6 degrees. Austria was discovered by the Austrian astronomer Johann Palisa at the Austrian Naval Observatory in Pola, that nowadays is Pula, Istria, Croatia.

The asteroid discoverer Johann Palisa named the asteroid #136 after his homeland. It isn’t the English name, but the Latin name! The asteroid Austria was the first asteroid, that was discovered from the country Austria.

A874 FA represents, like other place name asteroids, the place it is named after. The country of Austria in this case. Austria isn’t the only place name asteroid named for a first discovery from this place. The asteroid Asia for example also is the first asteroid, that was discovered from Asian soil. But this theme also isn’t a frequent theme. So Austria can also hint to honoring pioneer work.
