Nausikaa

Nausikaa is asteroid #192 and also known as A879 DA. Nausikaa’s orbit is characterized by a semi-major axis of 2.40 Astronomical Units, an eccentricity of 0.25, a period of revolution of 1 360 days, and an inclination of 6.8 degrees. Nausikaa was discovered by the Austrian astronomer Johann Palisa at the Austrian Naval Observatory.

Nausikaa is named after Nausikáa (Ναυσικάα), a princess from the Odyssey. While playing at the beach of Schería (Σχερία), she and her servants find a castaway. She brings him to her father’s palace. There the castaway, who is Odysseus, tells about his involuntary travel. Most of it is already behind him and Schería (Σχερία) is the last stopover. So Odysseus is known on this island and offered to stay. But he prefers to return home, accompanied by some inhabitants of this island. In later legends, the son of Odysseus, Tēlémachos (Τηλέμαχος), goes to Schería (Σχερία), falls in love with Nausikáa (Ναυσικάα) and founds a family with her. But in other legends, Tēlémachos (Τηλέμαχος) visits other places of the Odyssey and in each variant marries a woman from such a place, while Nausikáa (Ναυσικάα) plays no further role. So Nausikaa is a benefic, especially for castaways.
