Nike

Nike is asteroid #307 and also known as A891 EB. Nike is of the type C or CX. Nike measures 55 km in diameter. Nike’s orbit is characterized by a semi-major axis of 2.91 Astronomical Units, an eccentricity of 0.14, a period of revolution of 1 814 days, and an inclination of 6.1 degrees. Nike was discovered by the French astronomer Auguste Honoré Pierre Charlois at the Nice Observatory (Observatoire de Nice) in southeastern France near the border with Italy.

Nike is named after the Greek goddess Níkē (Νίκη). She is the goddess of victory and hence the Greek counterpart of the Roman goddess Victoria, after whom the asteroid Victoria perhaps is named. The name Níkē (Νίκη) was chosen for asteroid #307 because the city of Nice, from where the asteroid was discovered, is named after Níkē (Νίκη), too. The Titan Pallas (Πάλλας) and the river goddess Styx (Στύξ) are the most frequently listed candidates for being the parents of Níkē (Νίκη). The Titan Pallas (Πάλλας) is the Titan god of warcraft, perhaps hence also Ares is sometimes given as her father. Níkē (Νίκη) is portrayed with different attributes, for example holding different items, sometimes having wings. Only in the case of the winged Níkē (Νίκη) is sure that she is thought to be an independent goddess and not only an epithet or alternative form of Athena. In Athens, Níkē (Νίκη) always had been associated with the city goddess Athena, who gave victories to Athens. But Athena used to call herself Pallas after the dear friend, who she accidentally killed, so this Pallas perhaps merged or was confounded with the Titan god of warcraft because Pallas Athena also is the Greek goddess of military strategy. So Níkē (Νίκη) very likely evolved from an epithet of Pallas Athena. Níkē (Νίκη) represents the result of clever strategies.
