Throwing without Touching

A rather old legend claims that martial artists, who practice tài-jí-quán (太極拳), would be able to throw their opponents without touching them. All the tài-jí-quán (太極拳) masters, who ever got interviewed and asked about this topic, always answered that they aren’t able to do this, know nobody able to do this and also don’t believe that it would be possible. Yet I recently, when I was looking for the kanji of udekime-nage (腕極め投げ), had to read that the aiki-nage (合気投げ) is a throw in aikidō (合気道) and performed without touching the opponent.

This of course is impossible. Such a technique doesn’t exist! Neither in aikidō (合気道) nor elsewhere!
