But it had been inhabited from the 6th to the 12th century (christian calendar). The island had in the 6th century been an East Roman stronghold, while the Lombards controlled the entire surrounding. Isola Comacina during the Middle Ages was used as a refuge by the population living at the shores of Lake Como. Until 1169, when Frederick Barbarossa invaded the island during the course of his campaign to restore the authority of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1175, the island got cursed by Vidulfo, Bishop of Como. So nobody dared to settle there until the 20th century. The island features several archeological sites.

Comacina represents cursed places. This means places, where nobody dares to live. In particular if the place isn’t unsafe, but only feared.
