Davida is asteroid #511 and also known as 1903 LU. Davida is of the type C. Davida’s orbit is characterized by a semi-major axis of 3.17 Astronomical Units, an eccentricity of 0.19, a period of revolution of 2 058 days, and an inclination of 15.9 degrees. Davida was discovered by the American astronomer Raymond Smith Dugan at the Heidelberg-Königstuhl State Observatory (Landessternwarte Heidelberg-Königstuhl), where and while Raymond Smith Dugan made his Ph.D.
Davida is named after the American astronomer David Peck Todd, who from 1881 until 1917 was a professor of astronomy and director of the observatory at Amherst College, after which the asteroid Amherstia is named. The Todd crater on Phobos also is named after him. David Peck Todd was the son of Sereno Edwards Todd and Rhoda (Peck) Todd. His incarnation lasted from 1855 until 1933. He studied at Columbia University from 1870 to 1872, then at Amherst College from 1873 to 1875. He earned his M.A. from Amherst in 1878. He was awarded an honorary Ph.D. degree from Washington and Jefferson College in 1888. David Peck Todd worked at the US Naval Observatory from 1875 until 1878, and at the US Nautical Almanac Office from 1878 until 1881. From 1881 until 1917, he was a professor of astronomy and director of the observatory at Amherst College. From 1882 until 1887, he was also a professor of astronomy and higher mathematics at the nearby Smith College.
David Peck Todd in 1879 married Mabel Loomis, after whom the asteroid Mabella is named. Her love affair with William Austin Dickinson became famous. David Peck Todd organized and led several expeditions, mainly for observing solar eclipses. His wife accompanied him on these travels and wrote books about them. During one of the expeditions, David Peck Todd produced a complete set of photographs of the 1882 transit of Venus. He during other expeditions erected several astronomical observatories. In 1907, he established Standard Time in Peru. In 1909, David Peck Todd proposed to use radio receivers for searching for extraterrestrial intelligence. But then David’s mental health declined rapidly and his behavior became erratic, so that Amherst president Alexander Meiklejohn forced David’s early retirement from the College. David Peck Todd together with his family then moved to Coconut Grove in Florida. In 1922, Mabel and their daughter Millicent made the difficult decision to have David institutionalized. For the remainder of his life, he was in and out of various mental and care facilities.
Davida as a person name asteroid represents persons named David. 1903 LU also represents persons, who are married to a cheating wife. Davida furthermore can also represent persons with mental health problems.
