As I meanwhile figured out, the documentary series, in which Creationists present science, had been produced for South American tv stations and its original language is Spanish. They especially explained that several methods of age-dating confirm that some rocks eventually are two-billion years old or even older. The methods are precise and reliable, which means that they bring always the same results and comparing different methods also brings similar results. This is different from exactness, which describes whether the result matches reality.

Creationists of course doubt the latter. They don’t doubt that several age-dating methods bring the result that something is two-billion years old or older because they meanwhile understood how age-dating is done and can’t find anything to criticize. Most methods use radioactive decay. The amount of atoms of radioactive isotopes and of their decay products have to be counted. Different isotopes like those of uranium, potassium, strontium, or argon can be counted independent from each other this way and then will confirm each other. Geologists can instead also look at the rocks themselves and by the nature of these rocks tell how long they took to get formed. The important piece of information that these periods of duration are known from computer simulations had this time been the skipped piece of information. Because the initial conditions of the radioactive decay of the isotopes useful for age-dating are unknown, the results of the measurements have to be compared to experiments for getting final results.

Creationists nowadays do their own research and understand these methods of age-dating, so use them instead of doubting them. But they don’t understand the Bible, so somehow see it in contradiction with scientific findings. Because the Creationists, too, know that this can’t be, so try to find flaws in the scientific findings and want to divide the found ages by at least thousand. One Creationist, who also is a geologist, reported about an eventually mysterious finding. He examines a rock formation in Utah. There misses a sediment layer, which should represent ten-million to thirty-million years. The sediment layer below still is soft. This must mean that during at least ten-million years happened absolutely nothing. But this span of time should be enough for erosion to level all of North America. So how did the soft sediment layer neither erode nor harden? While it also got for up to thirty-million years also not covered by more sediment? Because that absolutely nothing happens during tens of millions of years is quite impossible, so a very much shorter time span seems to be much more likely and this is what Creationists want to introduce everywhere in geology. I can’t explain the mystery and also don’t know the place in Utah, but that the Creationist examines something, which exactly matches his wishful thinking, is quite suspicious. Real scientists welcome the unexpected and want to find something surprising!
