UNESCO

UNESCO is asteroid #274300 and also known as 2008 QG24. UNESCO’s orbit is characterized by a semi-major axis of 2.43 Astronomical Units, an eccentricity of 0.14, a period of revolution of 1’388 days, and an inclination of 3.7 degrees. UNESCO measures 1.2 km in diameter and belongs to the Nysa-Polana asteroid complex. 2008 QG24 was in 2008 discovered at the Andrushivka Astronomical Observatory (Андрушівська астрономічна обсерваторія), Andrushivka (Андрушівка), Berdychiv Raion (Бердичівський район), Zhytomyr Oblast/ Zhytomyrska oblast (Житомирська область), Ukraine (Україна). This observatory also bears the name “July Morning” («Липневий ранок»), was built from 1998 until 2001, opened in 2001, and is the private observatory of the Ukrainian astronomer Yuri Mikolaiovich Ivashchenko (Юрій Миколайович Іващенко), who specialized in discovering asteroids. Most of the asteroids discovered at his private observatory get named after Ukrainian citizens or Ukrainian places.

The asteroid #274300 however got in 2014 named after the UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, a specialized agency of the United Nations. This agency promotes certain cultural activities, for example by deciding some special international fancy holidays. So the asteroid UNESCO presides over things like fancy holidays and related cultural activities.
