Kopff

Kopff is asteroid #1631 and also known as 1936 UC. Kopff was discovered by the Finnish astronomer Yrjö Vaisälä at Turku. The same asteroid was discovered before by Karl Wilhelm Reinmuth at Heidelberg and hence designated as 1926 TH. This is considered a precovery, which means to discover later that a celestial object, that got recently discovered, got actually discovered already before, but then track was lost. This happens quite often. The asteroid #1631 is also known as 1935 FG; 1946 SA; and 1952 HV2. Kopff is a member of the asteroid-family Flora/ Ariadne.

Kopff is named after the German astronomer August Kopff, who also discovered asteroids and comets. This explains why there also comets with the name Kopff. The comet C/1906 E1 (Kopff) is an hyperbolic and hence rather irrelevant comet. But 22P/ Kopff has an orbital period of only six years, so its orbit resembles very much that of an asteroid! This can lead to confusion. Currently should computer programs for astrology give only the positions of asteroids, not those of comets.

Kopff could have some relation with the 68 asteroids, that August Kopff discovered. Bilkis is among them, only as an example. Their themes don’t seem to be related much. After his wife Hormuth is the asteroid #805 named Hormuthia. This might be quite useful to know if Kopff or Hormuthia appear in prominent positions in synastries. Hormuthia is also known as 1915 WW, was discovered by Max Wolf, and is a Main Belt Asteroid and (for those, who think that size matters) one of the five-hundred largest asteroids. Hormuthia’s orbit exhibits an eccentricity of 0.18720 and an inclination of 15.728°.

The origin of the name Kopff is unknown. Kopff could be a writing variant, prior to the standardization of German orthography, of the word Kopf. This translates as head. That Kopff is a writing variant of a German word is likely because it is a German name. An asteroid representing heads is most likely only meaningful in the way that it represents the head of something, the head of an organization or similar thing.
