Alice is asteroid #291 and also known as 1954 UJ3. Alice was discovered by the Austrian astronomer Johann Palisa at the Vienna Observatory. Alice belongs to the type S, to the Inner Asteroid Belt, and probably to the asteroid-family Flora/ Ariadne.

The name Alice for the asteroid #291 is officially of unknown origin. This makes the meaning of the name itself more important. But here exist two theories. According to the common theory did Alice evolve from Aëlis, an Old French form of the German name Adelheid. This name means of noble kind. According to the second theory is Alice a variant of Ancient Greek Aliki (Αλική) and means daughter of the sea. It would then be an Ancient Greek variant of the Latin name Marina.

Alice is a frequent name and also a frequent acronym. But Alice was discovered in 1890 and hence probably named to early for most of the items, organizations, or persons named Alice. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, better known by his pen name Lewis Carroll, and his publisher Macmillan published Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland in 1865 and the sequel Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There in late 1871. Pete Carroll died in early 1898. The main character of his books is the only famous Alice, that I’m able to find for the time in question.

However most of the asteroids with names of officially unknown origin have common girl names. So it is likely that most of these asteroids are simply named after people, who only the discoverers knew. If only the discoverers knew them, then it is of course impossible to say anything about them. But it is also self-evident that an astrological force must have a meaning. It can’t have no meaning when it is named. The mythology as well as possible translations of a name should be considered when analyzing the meaning of an astrological force. Because more asteroids are named after characters of Lewis Carroll’s books, so these serve as a mythology. Alice is the heroine, who interacts with the other characters of this mythology, where Alice is the center and the other characters have more specific meanings.
