Myriostos

Myriostos is asteroid #10000 and also known as 1951 SY. Myriostos was discovered by Albert Georg Wilson, who lived from 1918 until 2012 and discovered five asteroids of which four are meanwhile named, at the Palomar Observatory. Myriostos has an orbital period of 1523 days, an orbital eccentricity of 0.303, and an orbital inclination of 20.6 degrees.

Myriostos is named after the Greek word for ten-thousand. This means that Myriostos is named after its own asteroid number. Naming asteroids in this manner is encouraged, although this case exhibits even less fantasy than Allodd or Alleven. The idea of the naming and numbering of this asteroid is to honor all the astronomers, who calculated the parameters of together ten-thousand asteroid orbits during the 198 years, which were needed until this many asteroid orbits were calculated. It was briefly discussed to give the number 10000 to Pluto because such round numbers are seen as important, but Pluto got the asteroid number 134340, while 10000 stayed with Myriostos, that is this way honored as the more relevant asteroid.

Myriostos represents reaching a milestone. Myriostos can’t indicate much more because it is only named after a number. Only why Myriostos got a Greek name, while Latin is the standard in the Solar System, can be pondered further.
