Ookuninushi is asteroid #10627 and also known as 1998 BW2. Ookuninushi was discovered by Shimizu Yoshisada (清水 義定) and Urata Takeshi (浦田 武) at the Nachi-Katsuura Observatory. Ookuninushi’s orbit has a period of 1 929 days, a semi-major axis of 3.03 Astronomical Units (Outer Asteroid Belt), and an inclination of 8.6°.
Sukunabikona is asteroid #10725 and also known as 1986 WB. Sukunabikona was discovered by Suzuki Kenzō (鈴木 憲蔵) and Urata Takeshi (浦田 武) at Toyota City, Aichi, Japan. Sukunabikona belongs to Vesta’s Hirayama-family.
Ookuninushi (オオクニヌシ in Japanese) is named after Ookuninushi-no-kami (大国主神). This is an important Japanese god and a descendant of Susanoo. Ookuninushi-no-kami (大国主神) is the ruler of all the kami (Japanese gods), who lived on Earth, opposed to the celestial kami, who lived under Amaterasu’s reign in the sky. Ookuninushi-no-kami (大国主神) was the one, who should have ruled the land according to Susanoo, but had to hand over the land to Ninigi. To Ookuninushi-no-kami (大国主神) was given in exchange the reign over the unseen world, kakuriyo (幽世), to where he withdrew. Ookuninushi-no-kami (大国主神) is enshrined in many shrines, has plenty of names, both because he is known as the god of nation-building, agriculture, business, medicine, love, marriage, and fortune. Ookuninushi-no-kami (大国主神) also appears in many tales under different names, for example as Oonamuji when he helped a skinned hare or (more likely from the different designations referring to it) rabbit (although hares are more likely to hop around alone), which is mentioned in the citation of the naming of the asteroid. Obviously not a very thoughtful comment because the asteroid is named Ookuninushi. Similar mysterious is why Sukunabikona should be a god of naughty character. The asteroid Sukunabikona (スクナビコナ in Japanese) is named after Sukunabikona-no-kami (少名毘古那神). He is the god of hot springs, agriculture, healing, magic, brewing sake, and knowledge. Sukunabikona-no-kami (少名毘古那神) is of thumb size and coincidentally became the companion of Ookuninushi-no-kami (大国主神). Sukunabikona-no-kami (少名毘古那神) was on a mission to create the land Ashihara-no-Nakatsukuni (葦原の中つ国) because the creation of the world wasn’t finished. The land was planned to separate the realm of the celestial gods from the realm of the dead by being between them. Ookuninushi-no-kami (大国主神) decided to help Sukunabikona-no-kami (少名毘古那神) with this mission. So they created lands together. Either all lands, where humans live, or at least Japan. Sukunabikona-no-kami (少名毘古那神) created all the things there, which he reigns. But as soon as they were finished Sukunabikona-no-kami (少名毘古那神) crossed the sea and disappeared in tokoyo no kuni (常世国), the eternal land. Many people believe that it would be the same as the land of the dead and this again the same as the underworld, but Japanese mythology gives not any hint to base such presumptions on.
Ookuninushi represents nation-building, agriculture, business, medicine, love, marriage, and fortune. But most important is the loss of power and being disappointed. Sukunabikona represents hot springs, agriculture, healing, magic, brewing sake, and knowledge. But most important is that Sukunabikona hints to people, who disappear suddenly or ghost you. Ookuninushi and Sukunabikona represent together a relationship, where Sukunabikona ghosts Ookuninushi in synastries.
