Crespodasilva

Crespodasilva is asteroid #96747 and also known as 1999 QQ2. Crespodasilva was discovered by Lucy d’Escoffier Crespo da Silva at the George R. Wallace Jr. Astrophysical Observatory. Crespodasilva’s orbit is characterized by a semi-major axis of 2.59 Astronomical Units, an eccentricity of 0.21, a period of revolution of 1 523 days, and an inclination of 13.2 degrees.

Crespodasilva is an exception among the asteroids because asteroids shouldn’t be named after the discoverer and asteroid discoverers mustn’t name asteroids after themselves. This rule is in this case only respected in so far as Crespodasilva got the name only after the death of the discoverer. But it is named after the discoverer. The name was suggested by Richard “Rick” P. Binzel. Lucy d’Escoffier Crespo da Silva was a Brazilian-US-American astronomer, who contributed, as the official naming citation emphasizes, data to the resarch on the Koronis asteroid-family, and lived from 1978 until 2000, when she killed herself.

I’m not sure whether her suicide made Lucy d’Escoffier Crespo da Silva be honoured by getting an asteroid named after her. Maybe it is simply meant commemorating her because such a death is often regarded as unnecessary? How and why she killed herself remains mysterious. Her death apparently was declared a suicide because a farewell letter was found. This evidence would be shallow if there would be any competing theory. But there isn’t.

So Crespodasilva belongs to the cause-of-death theme asteroids. While for example Banno, that is also in this category, indicates the end of an incarnation caused by a traffic accident, Crespodasilva indicates that an incarnation ends or already ended by suicide. Crespodasilva is also a person name asteroid representing persons with the surname Crespo da Silva. This surname doesn’t seem to be frequent, but this seems to be independent from the importance of representing certain names in the sky. So Crespodasilva belongs to the cause-of-death theme asteroids as well as to the person name asteroids. Cause-of-death theme asteroids, as far as I did examine them, seem to be a subgroup of person name asteroids.
