Yarilo

Yarilo is asteroid #2273 and also known as 1975 EV1. Yarilo was discovered by the Russian-born Soviet astronomer Lyudmila Ivanovna Chernykh (Людми́ла Ива́новна Черны́х), colleague and wife of the Russian-born Soviet astronomer Nikolai Stepanovich Chernykh (Никола́й Степа́нович Черны́х), at the Nauchnij Research Campus Station of the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory. Yarilo’s orbit is characterized by a semi-major axis of 2.45 Astronomical Units, an eccentricity of 0.17, a period of revolution of 1 401 days, and an inclination of 0.39 degrees.

Yarilo is named after the Slavic god Jarilo (Ярило). He is the god of love, frugality, the spring season, and the Sun. Jarovit was a local variant of his name. A golden shield, which guaranteed victory in battle, was stored in Jarovit’s temple, so this variant seems to be a god of war or victory, too. Jarilo is the son of Mokosch and Perun. Jarilo has a sister, who is named Mara. Mokosch is the earth and Perun makes her frugal. Mara and Jarilo are deities of frugality too. Mara is the Moon. Under the name Morena she also is the winter and darkness. Mara also is able to turn into a cuckoo. Jarilo is able to turn into a horse. Mara is not only the sister, but also the wife of Jarilo. They mate each year and the green vegetation of spring is the result. But Mara hates that Jarilo isn’t faithful to her. (The Sun shines on everybody.) So she asks other brothers to kill him. After that she turns into an infertile old woman and is named Morena. Thus the four seasons are created.

Yarilo besides Inti, Amaterasu, and the Egyptian facets of the Sun is another facet of the Sun. The Egyptians had different solar deities for the differently strong Sun throughout the day. The Slavic god Jarilo (Ярило) is a sole solar deity characterized by the up an down of the strength of the Sun throughout the year. So Yarilo indicates ups and downs. Yarilo also indicates the different influences of the Sun depending on the season.
