LPL was discovered during the course of the Spacewatch Project at the Kitt Peak National Observatory.

LPL is named after the University of Arizona’s Lunar and Planetary Laboratory. This is the institution, which organizes the Bratfest festival, after which the asteroid Bratfest is named. The Lunar and Planetary Laboratory was founded in 1960.
