Delphi

Delphi is asteroid #73769 and also known as 1994 PN12. Delphi’s orbit is characterized by a semi-major axis of 3.98 Astronomical Units, an eccentricity of 0.26, a period of revolution of 2 897 days, and an inclination of 1.9 degrees. Delphi belongs to the group Hilda and to the asteroid-family Schubart. Delphi was discovered by the Belgian astronomer Eric Walter Elst at the La Silla Observatory.

Delphi is named after the ancient sanctuary of Delphi, which was by the ancient Greek thought to be the center of the world. Delphi is located in an altitude of seven-hundred meters on the south-west slope of Mount Parnassós (Παρνασσός) and in the valley of the river Pleistos (Πλεῖστος), nowadays rather known as “the dry river” or Xeropotamos (Ξεροπόταμος). The official naming citation of the asteroid and hence also the English portion of Wikipedia mentions Phokis (Φωκίς) instead, but this isn’t a river! Phokis (Φωκίς) simply is the name of the mountain range, to which Mount Parnassós (Παρνασσός) belongs. Delphi is a renowned archeological site. It was the place, where Pythia (Πυθία), after whom the asteroid Pythia is named, received her prophecies from Apollon.

Delphi was found by Zeus, who let two eagles fly from the ends of the world. The eagles met and Zeus decided that the place of this meeting had to be the center of the world. Gaía (Γαῖα) gave birth to the winged serpent Pýthōn (Πύθων) there. This Pýthōn (Πύθων) knew that Apollon whould slay her (older version) / him (newer version) one day. So Pýthōn (Πύθων) tried to kill Lētṓ (Λητώ), after whom the asteroid Leto is named, before she could give birth to Apollon. But Pýthōn (Πύθων) never arrived at the place of Lētṓ (Λητώ), who retreated to the newly created island Delos (Δῆλος). So Pýthōn (Πύθων) didn’t kill Lētṓ (Λητώ). But Apollon knew that Pýthōn (Πύθων) tried this, so Pýthōn (Πύθων) got on Apollon’s list, when he took revenge on all, who didn’t help his mother. Apollon slew Pýthōn (Πύθων) at the latter’s home in Delphi and thus the place bathed in the blood and the magical power of Pýthōn (Πύθων). Thus Delphi became the property of Apollon and a suitable place for the famous oracle site. The astrological meaning of Delphi is clear this way, too: The place, to where you go when you seek advice and where you get an oracle.
