The asteroid #432 is named Pythia, but also known as 1897 DO. Pythia is a stony asteroid in the Inner Asteroid Belt. Pythia was discovered by Auguste Charlois on 18 December 1897 in Nice.
Pythia (Πυθία) was the name, or rather title, of the high priestess at the temple of Apollon in Delphi, originally named Pytho because it was the place, where Apollon slew the mythological beast Python. Its body was believed to rot at this place. This must at some point in time also have become forgotten because only newer research has shown (although some ancient Roman authors have also suspected it) that poisonous gases come out of the ground in Delphi. (The asteroid #73769 is named Delphi.) The high priestess used to sit right above a crevice and had thus to breath poisoned air, which made her hallucinate and utter words, which couldn’t be understood, but were interpreted by other priests of the temple. These interpretations were the famous oracles of Delphi. Asking such an oracle was very expensive. Non-rich people had to be satisfied with simple fortune telling, where beans were drawn as lots, and were only permitted to ask yes-no-questions. Apollo took Delphi from Gaia, but Aeschylus reports that Delphi belonged first to Gaia (because she is the Earth, so all places on the planet belonged originally to here), then to Themis, then to the titaness Phoibe, who gave it finally to Apollon at his birthday.
Many astrological forces could have the ability of predicting the future as a part of their meaning. For example many centaurs because at least the Centaurs Okyrhoe, Asbolus, and Pholus were known to be very capable seers. Pythia hints definitely to predicting the future too. Although Pythia hints also to elitism due to the way to sell the oracles at Delphi. Pythia belongs to the astrological forces, which are relevant for me. Because my natal Pythia is conjunct my natal midheaven. How predicting the future is part of my vocation is something, which I can see clearly. Eventually every science has the purpose to predict the future. The different branches of science can do this only in their very narrow fields of specialization. But the great art of astrology is also the universal science, which can make predictions in many fields. All scientific methods, including astrology, need a fair amount of mathematical skill or at least mathematical understanding. Hence these methods could also be seen as elitist. At least they aren’t simple fortune telling and have hardly anything to do with it. Sometimes astrology is abused as fortune telling and this is how many astrologers make a living. But for me this is the reason why I can’t be an astrologer.
