Oenone is asteroid #215 and also known as A880 GA. Oenone’s orbit is characterized by a semi-major axis of 2.77 Astronomical Units, an eccentricity of 0.03, a period of revolution of 1 680 days, and an inclination of 1.7 degrees. Oenone was discovered by the Russian-German (Prussian because Germany as such still didn’t exist) astronomer Viktor Karlovich Knorre (Виктор Карлович Кнорре) at the Berlin Observatory. Oenone was the second of his four asteroid discoveries.
Oenone is named after the nymph Oinṓnē (Οἰνώνη) from Greek mythology. She is an Oread or mountain nymph. The Oreads are further divided into groups named after the mountains, where they live. Oinṓnē (Οἰνώνη) belongs to the Idaeae, which means that she lives on Mount Ida in western Anatolia. Two mounts of this name have to be distinguished, so this one in western Anatolia also has been known as the Phrygian Ida. Oinṓnē (Οἰνώνη) perhaps is the daughter of King Oeneus (Οἰνεύς) of Calydon, but this is most likely only a misunderstanding due to the similarity of their names. King Oeneus (Οἰνεύς) of Calydon is named this way because he introduced wine-making to Aetolia and had vine planted. The name of Oinṓnē (Οἰνώνη) also links her to vine, but this probably only because vine could be grown on Phrygian Ida. Oinṓnē (Οἰνώνη) more likely is the daughter of the river Kebrḗn (Κεβρήν).
Hekábē (Ἑκάβη) is the mother of Páris (Πάρις) of Troy. The asteroid #108 or Hecuba is named after her. Hekábē (Ἑκάβη) got prophesied that her son Páris (Πάρις) would cause the destruction of Troy and she had dreams of the city burning. So in an attempt to prevent this event, she exposed Páris (Πάρις) on Phrygian Ida. A shepherd named Agelaos (Ἀγέλαος) found him and brought him up as his own son. So Páris (Πάρις) lived on Phrygian Ida as a shepherd, married Oinṓnē (Οἰνώνη) and she gave birth to his son Kórythos (Κόρυθος). But when Aphrodite promised Helen of Sparta to Páris (Πάρις), he immediately abandoned his wife and his son. Páris (Πάρις) took part in the funeral event for the prince of Troy, who got declared dead after he was exposed. Páris (Πάρις) didn’t know that he himself was this prince. But other people recognized him. To expose him had exclusively been the decision of his mother, so he again was accepted in the royal family and unsuspected became prince of Troy again this way. He used his new position for abducting Helen of Sparta. Kórythos (Κόρυθος) saw Helen of Sparta after her abduction and also fell in love with her. Páris (Πάρις) didn’t recognize his own son and so killed him out of jealousy. Páris (Πάρις) visited Phrygian Ida only once again because he got wounded in a battle of the Trojan War and knew that Oinṓnē (Οἰνώνη) was a capable healer, who even knew an antidote against the poisoned arrows of Herakles (Ἡρακλῆς). But Oinṓnē (Οἰνώνη) couldn’t forgive Páris (Πάρις) that he abandoned her and then even killed their son. Páris (Πάρις) died of the wound. Oinṓnē (Οἰνώνη) burnt his body on a stake and jumped onto it and killed herself this way.
Oinṓnē (Οἰνώνη) has in arts always been the representative of the abandoned woman. I see no reason to dissent from this. So the asteroid Oenone represents abandoned women.
