Hecuba is the name of asteroid #108, that is a stony asteroid and belongs to the Hygiea-family. Hecuba is found in the Outer Main Belt and there in the Hecuba-gap, which is named after this asteroid. There are more asteroids, that can be found in the Hecuba-gap, although Jupiter is clearing this region from asteroids. The Hecuba-gap is the outer border of the Asteroid Main Belt. The orbital group of the Hecuba-asteroids is defined by a 2:1 orbital resonance with Jupiter and divided into three subgroups.
The Zhongguo-asteroids are defined by half-life periods of their orbits of above 500 million years. Of course there are only few of them (twenty-six known yet) and only fewer of them are named:
- Zhongguo (#3789)
- Macke (#11266)
- Helmholtz (#11573)
- Pyramus (#14871)
- Rayleigh (#22740)
- Renéefleming (#31249)
- Anneblack (#45511)
The Griqua-asteroids are defined by half-life periods of their orbits of between 100 million years and 500 million years. There are very few of them and even fewer are named:
- Griqua (#1362)
- Navajo (#3688)
- Kohman (#4177)
- Dirichlet (#11665)
- Euphrates (#13963)
Finally the unstable subgroup without an own name, defined by half-life periods of their orbits of less than 70 million years. This is the largest subgroup and the shorter the half-life period of the orbit, the more asteroids are counted. So this subgroup is the most likely for the discovery of more asteroids. But still only few are named:
- Pala (#1921)
- Zulu (#1922)
- Ferraz-Mello (#5201)
- Taranis (#5370, also an Amor-asteroid!)
- Stephengould (#8373)
- Midsomer Norton (#9767)
- Kasbek (#65541)
Hecuba is the Latinized version of Hekabe. #108 or Hecuba is named after this sixth and last queen of Troy, wife of Priamos, and mother of Hektor, Paris, Helenos, Troilos, Kassandra, Polydoros and twelve more children. Hekabe lost all of her children because of the war against the Greeks. She herself became a slave of Odysseus.
Hecuba was always the personification of the misfortune and misery, which women can experience because of war. So the astrological meaning of Hecuba is obvious and shouldn’t need more research.
