Ocllo is asteroid #475 and also known as 1901 HN. Ocllo is of the type X and a Mars-orbit-crosser. Ocllo’s orbit is characterized by a semi-major axis of 2.59 Astronomical Units, an eccentricity of 0.38, a period of revolution of 1 524 days, and an inclination of 18.9 degrees. Ocllo was discovered by the American astronomer DeLisle Stewart at Harvard College Observatory’s Arequipa Station in Peru, from where he discovered several nebulae. Ocllo was his only asteroid discovery.
Ocllo is named after Mama Uqllu. The name was by Spaniards understood as Ocllo and some more variants exist due to misreadings. Mama Uqllu is an Inca goddess and legendary queen. Mama Uqllu is a daughter of Mama Killa and of Inti, the Sun god of the Incas, or a daughter of Mama Qucha (the sea) and Wiraqucha, after whom the asteroid Viracocha is named and thus a sister of Inti. Mama Killa and Inti are the parents of Manco Cápac, who was the first ruler of the Incas. Mama Uqllu is his wife and hence the first queen of the Incas. Manco Cápac and Mama Uqllu were by Mama Killa and Inti sent to Earth. The Tupayawri, a golden rod, was given to them to the purpose to indicate the most frugal place, which should be there, where the Tupayawri sinks into the earth. Manco Cápac founded the city Qusqu at that place and by this also the Kingdom of Qusqu. The city still exists and is better known as Cusco or Cuzco. The Kingdom of Cuzco in subsequent years developed into the Cuzco Federation and the Inca Empire. Mama Uqllu is the Inca’s fertility goddess. She shall have taught spinning thread, sewing, and household duties to the women of the Incas.
Ocllo at the first glance seems to be only one of several asteroids named after fertility goddesses. But if I recall correctly after meanwhile having already treated all earlier named asteroids, Occlo is the first named after a deity from a clearly non-European mythology. There had been place names, but of places, where emigrants from Europe settled. Occlo seems to be the first asteroid name with no connection to Europe, except that the Incas got overthrown by Spaniards. So Ocllo indicates to get acknowledged by foreign cultures.
