Potato was discovered by the Hong-Kong-born Canadian amateur astronomer Yeung Kwong-Yu (楊 光宇)/ William Yeung at his own private Desert Eagle Observatory (IAU-Code: 333), which is situated near Benson, Arizona, USA.
