Chiron is the first discovered and named centaur. Chiron is categorized as an asteroid (#2060) as well as a periodical comet (95P/Chiron) because Chiron has a cometary coma and hence both designations. Chiron was discovered in 1977 and hyped as a tenth planet. This led to Chiron getting a symbol, which is ⚷ and the last symbol, that any celestial object got as a consensus, although it is a consensus of the Unicode authority and not a consensus of any astronomical authority. Because of the discovery date is Chiron also designated as 1977 UB. The orbit of Chiron is inclined towards the ecliptic by 6.9° and an orbital period is fifty years and five months. The orbit stretches from the inner rim of Saturn’s orbit to the outer rim of Uranus’ orbit. Chiron seems to have a ring, but that’s still disputed.
Chiron and after Chiron other centaurs were named after the Centaurs of Greek mythology because of the partly cometary nature of these asteroids, while the mythological Centaurs are half human and half horse. Chiron is of different origin than the other Centaurs, but connects different tales like those of Prometheus, Apollo and his son Asclepios, Heracles, and the other Centaurs. While the other Centaurs are offspring of Ixion, Chiron is the son of Philyra, who is the daughter of Okeanos, and of Kronos. But Rhea was already Kronos’ wife and Kronos didn’t want to know her about his affair, so he turned his shape into that of a horse and that led to the birth of a creature half horse and half human. Philyra felt very ashamed that she had given birth to such a “monster” and asked Zeus to take her human shape from her. Zeus turned Philyra into a linden tree. Chiron became the mentor and teacher of many gods and half-gods and princes. This is how Chiron is the link between many other tales. When Chiron, who was also at home at Mount Pelion, was wounded by the Heracles’ poisoned arrow, Chiron received a wound, that never healed. Chiron taught the art of healing to his students, so he had profound medical knowledge. But this didn’t help him. So he went on a long journey and searched everywhere for a remedy. His medical knowledge increased and his own wound stayed the only wound, that he was never able to heal. Correlating with the age of the version of the tale is Chiron’s wound located on different heights. The probably eldest versions place the wound into the foot, while the youngest versions place the wound into the hip. Chiron finally decided to die in order to end the pain. This wasn’t easy since Zeus had made Chiron immortal. But he learned on his travels that the curse, from that Prometheus suffered, could be lifted if an immortal would be willing to die for Prometheus. So Chiron sacrificed his immortality to free Prometheus and was able to die and end the pain this way. Zeus deemed this a heroic deed again, so Zeus turned Chiron into the asterism (constellation) Sagittarius.
Like other centaurs is Chiron astrologically most useful for working with synastries. The Magi Astrological Society found that Chiron represents romance and that the most romantic relationships are indicated by harmonious (defined by them as conjunct, trine, parallel, contraparallel, or quinkunx) interaspects of Chiron in one horoscope with Venus or Neptune or Jupiter in the other horoscope. The Magi Astrological Society calls these magic linkages, Chiron with Venus also a Cindarella Linkage. Other astrologers find the Magi astrologers strange and this often has to do with their habit of renaming known things and then declare them their own discoveries. But many astrologers have nevertheless examined the interaspects of Venus with Chiron independently and found that they are indeed a great indicator of romantic relationships. Aspects of Chiron within one horoscope, especially with Venus, indicate a romantic vein.
