Walhalla is asteroid #1260 and also known as 1933 BW. Walhalla was discovered by Karl Wilhelm Reinmuth at the Heidelberg Observatory, which is correctly called the Landessternwarte Heidelberg-Königstuhl and belongs to the University of Heidelberg. Walhalla is an ordinary Main Belt Asteroid.
Walhalla is named after a monument near Regensburg in Germany. This monument is a kind of hall of fame. It was erected after Napoleon had defeated many of the German-speaking dukedoms and principalities. Germany still didn’t exist during that time!
The construction of this building was a direct result of Napoleon’s victory. The Bavarian king Ludwig I. ordered the Walhalla Memorial Hall to be built with the intention to remind German-speaking people that they have actually a common culture and common history and to some degree a common mentality. Although the Walhalla was more ridiculed than honored (and this is a trait of the common German mentality) it was a step towards forming Germany. The monument could be a tourist attraction if it would be less difficult to get there. The monument is of course named after the great hall of the warriors slain in battle of the Norse mythology.
Walhalla literally means hall of the deceased. Many astrological forces and especially all of the longest known are named after entities from mythology. But this asteroid shall be named only after a memorial? This has to do with German mentality. After the Nazis abused Norse mythology often for their own ideology, many Germans dislike Norse mythology only for this reason and avoid it. So when suggesting a name for an asteroid, then a German could very well prefer to allude to Norse mythology in an indirect way.
Walhalla in Norse mythology is the place, where half of the warriors, who got slain in battle, live after they are deceased. The other half lives in Freya’s realm. Walhalla is Odin’s/ Wotan’s realm. People there are drinking, eating, and fighting all day. The warriors still fight, not only because they are used to, but also to prepare for the final battle, when they will be required to fight at the side of the gods in order to save the world. When they fight in Walhalla, they can die there. What happens to such a soul then? Walhalla is the place for warriors, who got slain in battle, so the soul arrives in Walhalla again. You can “die” there infinite times, but will always return to Walhalla as a living soul until the next day.
So the meanings of the astrological force Walhalla are plenty. It can be a place name asteroid and hinting to Germany. It is a mythological asteroid too. Just like the asteroid Brocken is both in one. But Walhalla hints to Norse mythology, which is as rich as Greek, Roman, or Hindu mythology and also related with them. Walhalla can be a place for training or a place for celebrating or a place for being honored. This reminds me at the multipurpose hall in my village. Many places, at least in Germany, have such halls. Walhalla certainly represents them too. Walhalla belongs also to the spiritual realm asteroids, that show relations with the deceased. My natal Walhalla is conjunct my natal midheaven and represents there certainly a spiritual realm.
