Akka and Ukko

Akka is asteroid #8034 and also known as 1992 LR. Akka was discovered by American astronomer couple Carolyn and Eugene Shoemaker at the Palomar Observatory, California, on 3 June 1992. Akka is a Near Earth Asteroid of the group Amor.

Ukko is asteroid #2020 and also known as 1936 FR. Ukko was discovered by the Finnish astronomer Yrjö Väisälä at Turku. Ukko is a member of the Hirayama-family Eos.

Akka and Ukko are both named after Finnish deities. Ukko is the supreme god, the god of the sky, and the god of thunder. Akka is the earth mother, the goddess of the harvest as well as of female sexuality and frugality. The name Ukko is translated as old man, while the related word ukkonen means thunder. The name Akka is translated as old woman. Akka also is the name of a mountain and many other geographical names are related to this mountain, which is nowadays a part of Sweden. Akka is known as a goddess in Estonia and in Norway too. Maaema is the Estonian name and Máttaráhkká is the Norwegian name for Akka. In Finland she also bears the alternative name Rauni. It isn’t completely sure that she is the same goddess because Finnish deities are almost forgotten and only some are still known as their folklore versions. Ukko also is the name of a mount sacred to the indigenous Samen in Finland. The Midsummer fire is called ukko-kokko in Finland. The god Ukko is also known as Uko, Isäinen, Ylijumala, or Ukko-Ylijumala. Uku is the Estonian name of Ukko. The (probably) first creation of Ukko was Ilmatar, the goddes of the air, who then created the Earth. Ukko is depicted as an old man with white hairs and a beard. He has a bow, a hammer named ukonvasara (simply meaning Ukko’s hammer), an axe, and a flaming sword. He is accompanied by giant eagles. He drives a chariot over stony ways in the sky, the wheels give off sparks and thus he causes thunderstorms.

Akka and Ukko are another couple, so these astrological forces are useful for synastries. Then they represent growing old together. Besides this Akka and Ukko are additional variants of the frugality goddess and of the god of thunder, who also is the supreme god. Ukko is the Finnish version of the Greek Zeus, the Roman Jupiter, the Germanic Donar, or the Slavic Perun. Like the Slavic deities, so are Finnish deities almost forgotten completely. Because there is a Norwegian name for Akka, so the Finnish deities could be forked off versions from Norse/ Germanic deities. While the Norse/ Germanic as well as the Slavic deities became victims of christian missionaries, who changed those deities according to the new doctrines, the Finnish deities seem to have been spared from this, perhaps because they had been deities of the indigenous Samen, and instead became folklore figures on the level of Santa Claus. The main difference between Ukko on the one and Donar and Perun on the other side seems to be Akka, who is, different from Sif, also an independent deity, while Perun seems to be single. Ukko should also be tried in astrological weather forecasts as an indicator for thunder. But the meaning old man shouldn’t be forgotten. So Ukko and Akka are likely to represent old people with bad hearing, who use to speak very loud.
