Obelix

Obelix is asteroid #29402 and also known as 1996 TT9. Obelix was discovered by the Czech astronomers Miloš Tichý and Zdeněk Moravec at the Kleť Observatory (Hvězdárna Kleť ), where Miloš Tichý is the director. Obelix’ orbit is characterized by a semi-major axis of 3.09 Astronomical Units, an eccentricity of 0.04, a period of revolution of 1 984 days, and an inclination of 8.2 degrees.

Obelix is named after the character Obelix from the comic book series Les aventures d’Asterix. Obelix is the best friend and sidekick of Asterix. So as already in the case of the astrological force Asterix, I quote the official naming citation (of Obelix in this case):

Obelix is Asterix’s devoted friend in the cartoon series Les aventures d’Asterix by Uderzo and Goscinny. A menhir delivery-man by trade, he is always ready to drop everything and go off on a new adventure–so long as there’s wild boar to eat, and plenty of fighting.

The asteroid Obelix got named at the same day as the asteroid Asterix. Obelix had already got the asteroid number just one above Asterix in 1996. The naming citation forgot one important feature or maybe two important features of the character Obelix: He fell, when he was a child, into the magic potion, which allows Asterix and his friends to resist the Roman army. When Obelix fell into the magic potion, he swallowed so much of it that his superpower stays permanently. The Romans sometimes apply some ruses for separating Asterix and his friends from the magic potion. Obelix is still able to defeat a whole Roman legion in these cases. So such Roman plans fail always. The Roman soldiers in the four forts, which surround the resisting village, know exactly what Asterix and his friends are able to do, so prefer to seek no trouble with them. But Rome often sends new people with new plans for conquering the village. The Roman soldiers in the forts warn the new people, but these don’t believe in such superpowers. So the new people get most of the pain in the fights, while the experienced soldiers try to flee and to hide. But from time to time they make the mistake to warn new people explicitly to watch out for the short one and the thick one. Thus they refer to Asterix (the short one) and Obelix (the thick one). This is a mistake because Obelix often hears this and he hates to be called thick. He is the most massive guy in the area and you could describe him as of strong built. This already is the worst, which he accepts. He punishes everybody, who calls him thick.

I think that the asteroids of the Asterix theme hint to resistance and resilience. If so, then Obelix represents to resist bullying, especially fat-shaming or other kinds of bullying of thick people. Although the comic book character Obelix already reacts aggressively to being described as thick, a mere description isn’t bullying. Also disliking somebody isn’t bullying because you simply can’t be everybody’s friend. So the astrological force Obelix could as well describe exaggerated reactions from people, who feel insulted quickly.
