Disappointing Anime

This article is a sequel to my article ‘Horrible Anime and Terrible Anime’. Showing disgusting things isn’t the only reason for making anime the opposite of recommendable. I already dedicated a whole article on the disappointment caused by the anime series Dr. Stone. I definitely can’t recommend to watch this anime series. This also is true for many more anime series, that I can’t recommend because they are disappointing. I also can’t recommend anime, that I know only incompletely or in a bad translation, but this isn’t a problem of the anime, so I’m already considering this for this article.

Detective Conan would be an example for an anime series, that I know only incompletely because only forty percent of the episodes got translated into German (eighty percent into English) and broadcasts always skip many episodes. But Detective Conan also is an example for a disappointing anime: Criminal cases are solved with the involvement of forensics. So the laws of nature are considered correctly. But as soon as Edogawa Konan (江戸川 コナン) or any other of the main protagonists is in danger, the laws of nature immediately are suspended and the protagonist gets saved. Police Inspector Megure Jūzō (目暮 十三) sometimes wonders why Mōri Kogorō (毛利 小五郎) and his family are involved in most of his cases. This indeed is very mysterious. But this mystery gets only mentioned for making jokes and forgetting it immediately. Already this ignorance is very disappointing. But biased laws of nature turn the whole series into rubbish. I watch it only because Mōri Ran (毛利 蘭) can greatly demonstrate certain things with respect to the martial arts.

Mōri Ran (毛利 蘭) opens a locked door. She doesn’t need any tool for this.
Mōri Ran (毛利 蘭) enters a car while this car is in full motion.

The anime series Appare-Ranman! (天晴爛漫!) is disappointing because it stays behind its possibilities, especially concerning the martial arts. The anime series Mob Psycho 100 shows psychic abilities, but also stays behind its possibilities. The graphics are disappointing additionally. My brother also watches many anime, but refrains from watching Mob Psycho 100 because he says that an anime with such bad graphics could never be a great anime.

Jing Xialian versus a bandit in a battle in the anime series Appare-Ranman! (天晴爛漫!). That these women are able to fight this way merely is accepted as given.
Graphics suddenly change to great if the main protagonist of Mob Psycho 100 is in love. The whole anime series got sacrificed for this little effect. All other scenes look like drawings from children.
Cloneblades and the witchblade from the anime series Witchblade turn girls into monsters.

The anime series Witchblade mainly is disappointing because the whole mystery of the witchblade merely is accepted as given. So you understand the anime only if you already know the American comic series, which is the original of Witchblade, or the American tv series, which got cancelled after only three episodes. These three episodes nevertheless have a German dub, so that I once watched them and hence can be sure that you don’t have an idea what is the witchblade unless you watched them, too.

Irrelevant girls from the anime movie Hello World.

The anime movie Hello World is an adaptation of the quasi-religious idea that we live in a simulation. In this case somebody must have programmed the simulation. The world of the programmers would be the real world and this real world has the Creator, that should be avoided by the quasi-religious idea to live in a simulation. So this quasi-religious idea tries to explain the world by introducing additional hypotheses, which change nothing and simply are superfluous. A movie based on this idea can only be disappointing. It naturally doesn’t have any real plot.

This is Aries Spring from the anime series Astra Lost in Space.

Astra Lost in Space had a great beginning. The clumsy protagonist Aries Spring is introduced. Already this name! Spring is the season of the Star Sign Aries. The beginning of the spring season even is defined as the point in time, when the Sun crosses the beginning of the zodiac sign Aries. Except the strange hair-doing of Aries Spring reminding at horns, she doesn’t have anything to do with the zodiac sign or with the constellation of Aries. The other protagonists have strange, but boring names. The protagonists at least travel through space with a spaceship and land on really alien planets. The protagonists name their spaceship Astra after they learnt the meaning of this word in the second episode. But after half of the series, Astra suddenly also is the name of the planet, where they grew up, so that they should be familiar with this name. The whole anime series consists of only twelve episodes. Is this really too long for a consistent plot?

Sonozaki Noriko (園崎 法子) from the anime series Kiznaiver explains the Kiznaiver Project to the other protagonists of the anime series.

Other anime series are similarly short. Making only twelve episodes of an anime series already became a standard because of fearing some competition. This already can make anime series disappointing. For example the Kiznaiver Project in the anime series Kiznaiver does nothing else than the body-link spell from the anime series Fairy Tail, but the body-link spell is only one of many spells and whole arcs of the series don’t need it, while the Kiznaiver Project already is the whole content of the anime series Kiznaiver.

A similar disappointment is the anime series Goblin Slayer. The title reveals the whole content, which is that goblins are slain. The title at least is a honest warning. But there are several mysteries in the anime, for example the goblins came from a green moon, and all these mysteries simply are ignored. Colorful is an anime movie, which wastes the opportunity to dig deeper into the topics of suicide and of reincarnation and instead only shows how a loser stays a loser. Anime once were only watched by nerds, but anime meanwhile became a mass product. There is such a flood of anime that great anime must be an exception. Not that there wouldn’t have been disappointing anime beforehand. I already found the classics of the Studio Ghibli strange and disappointing because they are surreal. Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi (千と千尋の神隠し) or Spirited Away by Miyazaki Hayao (宮崎 駿) is surreal and by some people counted as an early example of the isekai genre. This term refers to anime, which show a protagonist, who is transferred into a different world and has to live or to fulfill a mission there. Kono Subarashii Seikai-ni Shukufuku-wo ! (この素晴らしい世界に祝福を!) and Sword Art Online are the prototypes of this genre. The former is an example for a reincarnation into a parallel world and the latter an example for a man-made virtual world. Meanwhile very many anime of both types of isekai exist and none of them is able to keep up with the prototypes. So many isekai exist that the protagonists of some isekai immediately recognize the situation as an isekai situation and adapt to it as if it would be self-evident how to do this. Although I would like to watch some of them because some of them seem to be funny and aesthetic, how could such a mass product without any artistic ambition be not disappointing?
