Child

Child is asteroid #4580 and also known as 1989 EF. Child was discovered at the Palomar Observatory by the American astronomer Eleanor Francis Helin, who lived from 1932 until 2009 and co-discovered many comets and asteroids. Child belongs to the asteroid family Eunomia in the Asteroid Main Belt.

The discoverer of the asteroid Child made one co-discovery together with the astronomer Jack B. Child. They discovered the asteroid #7780, also known as 1993 NJ, that got named Maren after Maren Elizabeth Child. The JPL explains: “Her support and understanding of the sometimes bizarre demands of her partner’s minor planet observing schedules can only be interpreted as an equally serious commitment to astronomy.” Jack B. Child is a software engineer at the JPL and has discovered thirteen asteroids. Eight of them are named. Maren is an ordinary Main Belt Asteroid. The mentioned partner of Maren Elizabeth Child is probably Jack B. Child. The meaning of the B. in his name seems to be a secret. The asteroid #4580, that is known as Child, is named after Jack B. Child. Because Jack B. Child is a discoverer of asteroids, so it could be relevant that he discovered or co-discovered the following named asteroids:

  • Billschaefer (#5630)
  • Ocastron (#6525)
  • Susanring (#7779)
  • Maren (#7780)
  • Gregbryant (#9984)
  • Stony Ridge (#10168)
  • Juliabryant (#12446)
  • Mount Stromlo (#17640)

These asteroids seem to be named after people and places, which the discoverers knew personally. This is quite important because besides his occupation I didn’t figure anything out regarding the biography of Jack B. Child.

I tend to agree with the many asteroid astronomers, who let Child represent children in general. Although those astronomers didn’t think about it much and were instead only guided by the fact that the name Child is an English word. But I can’t figure out anything else and the approach has also worked in the case of the asteroid House.
