Takoyaki

Takoyaki is asteroid #6562 and also known as 1991 VR3. Takoyaki was discovered by the Japanese astronomer Yanai Masayuki (箭内 政之) and the Japanese amateur astronomer Watanabe Kazurō (渡辺 和郎), who also named the asteroid. Takoyaki was discovered at the Kitami Observatory. Takoyaki’s orbit is characterized by a semi-major axis of 2.26 Astronomical Units, an eccentricity of 0.23, a period of revolution of 1 242 days, and an inclination of 5.2 degrees. So Takoyaki is an ordinary Inner Belt Asteroid. This means orbiting close to the proximal rim of the Asteroid Main Belt.

Takoyaki is indeed named after the Japanese fast food/ street food takoyaki (たこ焼き). These are ball-shaped pieces of octopus fried in a batter. Takoyaki (たこ焼き) are popular and sold at every festival.

Takoyaki belongs to the food theme asteroids. These aren’t frequent and such themes, especially when about such culture-specific food, could cause some people to take asteroids no longer serious. But medieval Arabian and Persian astrologers had constructed many Arabian Points, also called Heavenly Lots, for predicting the markets of commodities, especially crops. So food theme asteroids certainly have their place in special applications of astrology. Takoyaki hints to street food, seafood, and Japanese food.
