Watanabe

Watanabe is asteroid #4155 and also known as 1987 UB1. Watanabe was discovered by the Japanese astronomers Ueda Seiji (上田 清二) and Kaneda Hiroshi (金田 宏) at Kushiro, Hokkaidō, Japan. Watanabe’s orbit is characterized by a semi-major axis of 2.43 Astronomical Units, an eccentricity of 0.24, a period of revolution of 1 388 days, and an inclination of 6.0 degrees. So Watanabe is a boring Main Belt Asteroid.

Watanabe is named after Watanabe Kazurō (渡辺 和郎), a Japanese amateur astronomer and prolific discoverer of minor planets. He made his asteroid discoveries together with Endate Kin (円館 金). They discovered for example the asteroid Nasu. Watanabe Kazurō (渡辺 和郎) is a frequent co-author and also author in several Japanese publications on astronomy. He named at least the asteroids:

  • (6562) Takoyaki (たこ焼き)
  • (7241) Kuroda (黒田)
  • (12127) Mamiya (間宮)
  • (12713) Tentaikojo (天体工場, Tentai kōjō)
  • (46610) Bésixdouze

The name Watanabe (渡辺) consists of the parts hen (辺), which means rim, edge, border and is only in the surname pronounced ~nabe, and watari (渡り), which means ferry; crossing; fish migration; bird migration. Watanabe is a very frequent family-name, especially among Japanese sportsmen. Watanabe is the name of a clan of samurai, who were vassals of the Tokugawa-shōgun (徳川将軍).

Known as Watanabe-epilepsy or Watanabe-syndrome is a form of epilepsy of toddlers. They can have seizures while awake or while sleeping. This is a mild and benign form of epilepsy and disappears even without treatment after some month. It was never observed in children older than twenty-four months.

When found together with Bennu in an astrological chart, maybe a decumbiture, then Watanabe should hint to the Watanabe-syndrome. In most cases will Watanabe, as a real person name asteroid, simply hint to people named Watanabe. This is at least Watanabe’s core meaning. Watanabe can also hint to very remote places and especially border regions.
